Tags let you categorize your photos by subject or location so that you can easily find them later on when needed. Lightroom also has a better organizational system than Photoshop Elements does because it supports tags better than Elements does. This makes sense because Lightroom was designed for professional photographers who need more precise control over their images. The main difference between the two programs is that Lightroom offers more advanced editing options than Photoshop Elements does. You’ll find tools for organizing your photos, editing photos, creating slideshows and more. Featuresīoth programs have a similar feature set. It offers many more advanced editing options than Elements does - including detailed controls over color balance, contrast and other aspects of lighting - as well as more options for organizing large numbers of pictures at once (which can be very helpful if you take lots of pictures). Lightroom is designed for professional photographers who want more control over their images before they’re published online or printed out as physical copies of their work. It also makes it easier to fix common problems like red eye or blemishes on skin. However, it does offer a lot of useful tools for improving photos. It has fewer features than Lightroom and costs less money. In general, Adobe Photoshop Elements is a more basic photo editor than Lightroom. It’s only available as part of Adobe’s Creative Cloud subscription service, which provides access to all of Adobe’s creative software applications at once (including Photoshop). Photoshop Elements is similar to its big brother, but it has fewer features and simpler controls.Īdobe Lightroom is a more robust photo editing application geared towards professional photographers. It’s available as a standalone program or as part of a subscription service (which also includes Photoshop CC). Photoshop Elements is a consumer-level image editor that’s part of Adobe’s Creative Cloud suite. Both programs offer similar features and capabilities, but they have some key differences in terms of interface and workflow. Lightroom is a standalone application, while Photoshop Elements comes as part of an overall suite of creative tools called Adobe Creative Cloud. Lightroom and Photoshop Elements are two different versions of Adobe’s professional photo editing software. Lightroom vs Photoshop Elements: What Are They? Lightroom vs Photoshop Elements: What Are They?.Here’s the link to check them out.įrom what I’ve heard, this has always been a big stumbling block for many Elements users so I hope this helps out. SIDE NOTE: If you’re into Elements and learning more about it, I write articles for a really great mini-magazine/website called Photo Elements Techniques. When you’re done just choose File > Save and return to Lightroom to see the edited version. Now when you go to edit your photo from Lightroom in to Elements, it’ll automatically create a copy and launch Elements for you, and the photo will automatically open. Here’s a screenshot of what it looks like. Instead of choosing the Elements icon in the main application folder, you need to go to Applications > Adobe Photoshop 11 > Support Files and choose the Adobe Photoshop Elements Editor.app file. But if you do, when you try to edit a photo in Elements you’ll see the Elements interface open, but the photo will never show up. Now, your first inclination (at least it was mine) is that you go to the Photoshop Elements folder and select the first Elements application icon that you see for your editor. First, you go to menu to Lightroom > Preferences and click on the External Editing tab. There is a trick, however, if you’re setting up Elements as an external editor with Lightroom (on the Mac that is). Elements is a hugely powerful program and I think for a lot of photographers out there, that just want basic cloning/healing/layers/selections/retouching, it’ll take care of most of your needs. With Elements at an insanely cheap price ($59 at Amazon for example), I honestly can’t blame ’em. I hear more and more that photographers who use Lightroom are now using Elements as well (as opposed to Element’s big brother, the full version of Photoshop).

In fact concert pianists are playing note for note what's right in front of them. In classical music we don't say someone isn't a musician because they are playing someone elses music. Im sure Wayne Gretzky and Michael Jordan had their respective idols they watched growing up. I'm not saying that your end goal should be to paint just as your idol, i'm saying that if you first emulate the paintings which you love the most, then you will naturally create your own style and vision as you become more confident. Historically speaking previously students would apprentice with a master painter, they would try their best to learn all of their teachers techniques and they did countless hours of repetitive drawings and paintings. Just about every single great artist over the centuries looked up to someone else. As if they should just find their own style on their own. Every semester I have another student who loves a certain type of art or artist but thinks it would be bad to try and emulate that persons style. One terrible idea which has seeped into many people's minds over the years is that it is bad to try and emulate someone elses art. Now that I've given you the “what” to do, I'm going to tell you the “why”. Start finding out what art you are drawn to the most. I've also included a list of interesting artists from all over the artistic spectrum available at /artists. If you are lucky enough to live in a city with a big beautiful museum then by all means go! Most public libraries also have a gorgeous selection of art books. If you already know about a movement of art (say impressionism, or surrealism) that you are interested in then search for pages about that. If you don't know where to start just go to and type in “20th century art” (or whatever century you're interested in). In this lesson I want you to start researching and becoming familiar with what drawings and paintings you really love. I've also included a step by step at the end of this chapter for those who are completely new to the Internet as well. Instead of hitting “send” you will be hitting “publish”. Trust me, if you can check email, you can create and maintain a blog. Many of you may be terrified by the idea of creating and maintaining a blog because you don't think of yourself as tech savvy. I'm a big proponent of blogging your work because I think it is an excellent way of making a time line of your inspirations as well as your progress. Now for those of you who have regular access to the Internet, and own a digital camera or scanner, you will be creating a blog. Those who can't make a blog will instead keep a sketchbook that also includes writing, and inspiration. This is an optional fist assignment just because I don't want someone's access to the Internet to effect their ability to use this book. You can opt for this font in step 3 of the procedure above, and you can substitute one of the following character codes in step 4. Select the check mark, right-click it, and make your desired changes by using the floating toolbar:Īnother font, Segoe UI Symbol, has three checkmark options. Once the check mark has been inserted, you may change its size or color. Then click Close to dismiss the dialog box. Another check-mark option is available two squares away from it (character code 254). In the grid of symbols, the check mark is selected. In the Character code box at the bottom, enter: 252 The Symbols button is on the far right end of the Insert toolbar tab. You can also select Double Strikethrough. Click the dialog box launcher on the bottom right of the Font group (corner button). Press ‘Enter’ to apply the bullets you have chosen. Then use the right arrow to go to the bullet of choice. In addition to these shortcuts, you can also override the standard PowerPoint increase/ decrease indent feature, to make these buttons shortcut keys for applying your saved paragraph styles. Apply level 3 bullet/ paragraph style shortcut: Ctrl+Alt+Shift+F3. Alt + 9 Creates an open circle bullet point. Select the paragraphs to which you want to add bullet points. Apply level 2 bullet/ paragraph style shortcut: Ctrl+Alt+Shift+F2. Here are nine Excel shortcuts for bullet points: Alt + 7 Creates a black dot bullet point. PowerPoint: Insert, select Symbols > Symbol Select the text you want to strikethrough. One such task is creating bullet points, which can be done faster using Excel shortcuts. You can highlight a word, sentence, bullet point, image or object and press this combination to cut the text from its original location. Word or Outlook: Insert, select Symbols then More Symbols The trick to effective use of bullet points is to know when not to use them. In your file, place the cursor where you want to insert the symbol. If you're looking for an interactive check box that you can click to check or uncheck, see: Add a check box or option button (Excel) or Make a checklist in Word. These work regardless of your version of PPT. You can then hit ALT + T to jump to the start at input box if you want. You can easily insert a check mark (also known as a "tick mark") in Word, Outlook, Excel, or PowerPoint. Yes, just hit ALT, H, N, N to open the Bullets and Numbering dialog box. King George V died in January 1936, what came to be known as the 'year of the three kings'.Įdward VIII was next on the throne but his reign lasted less than 12 months, as his marriage to American divorcee Wallis Simpson eventually prompted him to abdicate a decision that shocked the world. The eldest son Albert died before his father. Victoria's eldest son Edward married Princess Alexandra of Denmark in 1863, and they went on to have six children, including George, their second eldest son, who became King in 1910 when Edward passed away. During her lifetime the nation saw the Industrial Revolution and British Empire developed dramatically the Victorian era is a significant chapter in Britain's history. Victoria died on 22 January 1901, outliving her beloved husband Prince Albert by forty years, and becoming the country's longest reigning monarch. Prince Arthur, Duke of Connaught and Strathearn.Victoria and Albert had nine children, with their second child Edward becoming King on his mother's death: Albert's father and Victoria's mother were brother and sister (as shown in the tree above), meaning Victoria and Albert were cousins. Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha (Francis Albert Augustus Charles Emmanuel) was born on 26 August 1819, just three months after Victoria. Her father died (just six days before the death of George III, Victoria's grandfather) and when her uncle William IV died (aged of 71, Victoria became Queen at the age of eighteen. Her three uncles (those older than her father) left no surviving legitimate heirs. Edward, Duke of Kent (Victoria's father).William, Duke of Clarence (later William IV).How Victoria became heir to the throneīorn as Princess Alexandrina Victoria of Kent on at Kensington Palace, London, she was fifth in the line to the throne after the four eldest sons of George III: The marriage of Charles’ grandfather, James VI-I of Scotland and England married, Anne, the daughter of King Frederik II of Denmark and from this union also descends many of the great royal houses of Europe.Īs I discuss this topic on Monday we will come to see all the myriad ways in which the various royal families are related.Victoria was Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland from 20 June 1837 until her death on 22 January 1901, making her reign the second longest in British history, after Queen Elizabeth II (Victoria's great-great-granddaughter). Charles II of England and Scotland was the first cousin of King Louis XIV of France. Their mutual descent from the Electress Sophia made Fritz and Vicky 5th cousins.Įven if you go further back into the British Royal Family’s genealogy, their members frequently married into or chose members from the reigning houses that ruled France, Spain, Portugal, Denmark, Italy and many others. The next time the Prussians and the British royal family mingled was when Friedrich III’s great aunt, Princess Frederica, married Princess Victoria, the Princess Royal’s great uncle, Prince Frederick, Duke of York. Electress Sophia’s daughter, also named Sophia, married King Friedrich I of Prussia and their son, King Friedrich Wilhelm I of Prussia married his first cousin, Princess Sophia Dorothea of Great Britain. Both were descendants of Sophia of the Rhine (Electress Sophia) and Elector Ernst August of Hanover, the line from which the royal family earned its claim to the throne. Let us take the marriage of Victoria and Albert’s eldest daughter, Princess Victoria, the Princess Royal, and her marriage to the future Friedrich III, German Emperor and King of Prussia as an example. Today all the reigning royal families are related and this is nothing new. While this is true, in some ways I find it misleading because royals marrying royals is a practice that had been going on for centuries. One of the things I have read frequently is the statement that the descendants of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert married into all the great Royal Houses of Europe. To be more accurate I also am equally interested in the Edwardian Age and the time until the end of the First World War. After sorting out the genealogy of the British Royal Family the era that piqued my interest the most was the Victorian Era. When I began my interest in royalty, genealogy was the doorway by which I entered. By then Wehrle was living and working primarily in Northern CA, and was not present to witness the slow demise and eventual obliteration. Icarus held up well for 10 years before it was tagged an early graffiti, “fifth and hill” applied with a brush, before aerosols spray cans became the taggers choice. In subsequent works the Artist used more permanent materials, notably Keim Silicate paint and some of those have fared better. The color was brilliant at first, but unfortunately linseed oil binder reacts chemically to sunlight, fading and peeling, and the painting was doomed from its inception. The Fall of Icarus was executed in oils using glazing techniques, layering thin transparent colors over underpainting. During this same year, Terry Schoonhoven was painting his solo magnum Opus on the opposite wall facing Windward Avenue. Permission was obtained from Fern Violette, the building owner and Carl Borack, a film producer, her tenant. The work was funded by a special projects grant from the California Arts Council. Los Angeles is, of course, a desert, and generally under populated by angels…” The artist admits to a certain influence from Pieter Bruegal “ I intended Icarus to be a metaphor for the City of Angels at a time of denouement following a period of social change. Prescient in its desert LA landscape setting, the painting features the Art Deco Design Marquee from the local Fox Venice Theater. This magical daytime projection is being observed by a couple of Cowboys and several Angels. The work posits a deserted drive in theater with an onscreen apparition of an astronaut floating upside down near the planet Mars.
